Having identified the need for a new resource you will need to begin creating it filling out the Patient Information Proposal Form as you do so. You will also need to use the A4 template when creating your content to enable the creation of an html and Open File Format/PDF version. When creating your content you should follow the standards set out in the Patient Information Resource Policy and Procedures.
The Patient Information Resource Policy has a number of tips for the standards required of Patient Information content. The general principles include that Patient Information:
- Should have a clear title to enable ease of location
- Should be evidence based
- Should be objective and not leading
- Should be necessary
- Should fulfill their purpose
- Should be composed from the patient’s point of view
- Should not discriminate
- Should be inclusive
- Should signpost users to other forms of information
- Should provide end users with details on how to provide feedback (this will be part of the standard templates)
- Should not include references (unless required for third party copyright). References will be retained in the associated form for supply if requested.
In creating your content please be aware of patient health literacy, guidance in the button below, and consider using the NHS Document Readability Tool.
Use the boxes below to access resources from the Knowledge and Library Service to support you creating your content.
Please note you will need to record the evidence used in the creation of the resource on the associated Patient Information Proposal Form.
You can add quotes, images, video, audio, etc. to your resource. Please see the boxes below for guidance about finding and using external content for your resource. You will need to detail any content of this type used in the Patient Information Proposal form.
Please note: passing off other people’s work as your own or using it without permission is a copyright breach and may result in fines for the organisation and/or author. The Trust is legally liable for any infringements of copyright law in its publications.
Once you have created your resource, you will send a copy of the resource and Patient Information Proposal Form to patient.info@geh.nhs.uk so that Knowledge and Library Services can check for any copyright concerns. You should do this even if you have not identified any copyright concerns.
Finally, in creating your content, it is necessary to seek the guidance of others. As part of the Patient Information Resource Policy and Procedures it is a requirement for you to gain feedback from at least one peer (colleague) and one patient when creating a new resource. You can obtain feedback using the forms below. However, this is a minimum and getting further feedback, whether formally or informally, can only improve your resource. It is also advised that a patient review is undertaken for external information resources.
Once you have created your content, noted any copyright concerns, sent it to the Knowledge and Library Service for review, and had it reviewed by a peer and a patient, you can now move on to Step 3: Approval.
